Sriya says indian religion is polytheistic as if that's a foregone conclusion. I don't agree. There is not a single school of philosophy from ancient or mediaeval india that can be considered polytheistic.

Tyler asks about Iran and she goes on a sales pitch about her company, but provides absolutely no detail about Iran. Velina could make her statements with 80% fewer words. The discussion is more speculative than analytical. She thinks China will not attack Taiwan because it is not rational. The risk is too large. I tend to agree that it would be irrational. Later, she thinks Putin will try to take the whole of Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, and the Baltic States. This would also have been Velina's rational advice if she would be Putin's advisor. I scratch my head. How on earth would this be more rational? Guerilla warfare for years in western Ukraine. Signal to European states to invest more in defense. Chinese displeasure. She claims not to do any forecasting, only foresighting, which I interpret as consultant-speak for hedged, 10-15 year forecasting. It would have been nice if she explained her reasoning. I get neocon-vibes listening to Velina. Tyler does not ask a single difficult question.

The universe is beautiful because it is created by an intelligent Being who is ethically benign and sympathetic to human frailty. Evolution is a convenient fiction that does not deserve the reverent veneration is gets from the scientific community today nor does it deserve to be treated as the default explanation for our origins or even our destiny.

Valerina, to me, provides a point of view from eastern Europe that has lived under the oppression of communism. A fresh face in a world of analysts weighing in on geopolitics. Too often in the West, we are under the bombardment of narratives motivated by the Marxist media and having a voice countering their take is refreshing.

Haidt skews his figures by restricting the scope of his presentation to figures that go back no further than the year 2000 to make it look as if there is a clear connection between smartphones and social media and the uptick reported depression and self-harm. In the 1980's and 1990's the recorded rates of reported youth depression and self-harm were actually higher at their peak than they are now. All of this long before modern social media and smartphones even existed. And if you go back even further than that you find other peaks that are almost as high but bear in mind some of them are likely to be even higher than the official figures because in the early 20th Century depression and self-harm rates for groups such as blacks or immigrants were very likely not much figured into those studies. As for suicide, Haidt never tells you that suicide rates remained stable or regressed in other first world countries with access to social media, or that US suicide rates are almost at any even level with those of the 1950s. Gee, that whole "we are living in a time of unprecedented teen depression and self-harm" claim of Jonathan Haidt's is suddenly not looking so unprecedented now, is it?

Without considering cultural context, psychologists may misinterpret behaviors or phenomena as universal when they are actually culturally specific. For example, the practice of setting boundaries may be seen as a psychological necessity, when it might just be a cultural norm in Western societies. Findings from W.E.I.R.D. populations are often generalized to all humans, leading to theories and models that may not accurately reflect human universality.
